The Best Innerspring Mattress Reviews in 2021

The Best Innerspring Mattress Reviews

Innerspring mattresses utilize a core of springs or coils to provide support as opposed to foam mattresses where foam is used in the entire mattress. There are different types of coil systems and each of them has their pros and cons. The 4 most common coil systems are Bonnell, Continuous, Offset and Pocketed coils. The best innerspring mattress will usually have a pocketed coil system or a combination of two types.

Coil count and coil gauge are also important factors that determine the price and quality of a spring mattress. Coil count is the number of coils and coil gauge is the thickness of the wire used. A high coil count and thick coil gauge equals good support, durability and quality.

The comfort layer or the top layer of an innerspring mattress is usually made up of various types of materials such as standard foam, memory foam or even latex. Some manufacturers, though, use additional set of coils in addition to the foam in their comfort layer. This is a coil on coil system and it is only found in high-end mattresses.

Pros

  • Budget and mid-range innerspring mattresses are widely available online and at retail stores.
  • This type of mattress offers all kinds of firmness and comfort levels that can satisfy anyone’s budget.
  • Budget and mid-range innerspring mattresses are relatively cheaper than their memory foam or latex counterparts.
  • Innerspring mattresses tend to sleep cooler because of the airflow between the springs.
  • Great for couples that are sexually active due to the springiness/bounciness.

Cons

  • A low quality spring mattress can develop sagging and squeaking noise very fast.
  • Durability and longevity is also a problem with low quality models.

Top Rated Innerspring Mattresses – Budget

Budget spring mattresses are great for guest rooms or for temporary use. Of course, you can still use them as your everyday regular mattress but you shouldn’t expect too much of them. They are priced low because most of them only use regular polyurethane foam as the comfort layer, thus, sagging is a possibility. Some use specialty foams such as memory foam but that layer is usually pretty thin.

The Signature 13″ Mattress from Signature Sleep is a very budget friendly spring mattress that has a memory foam layer. It’s a good option for a guest room or you can use it as your regular mattress. Innerspring Mattress Guide

Here are some things that you need to know about innerspring mattresses. We’ve stated before that there are 4 common coil designs that are used in the construction of an innerspring mattress. Here they are and how they differ from one another.

Coil Designs

Bonnell Coils or open coils are very commonly used in many low priced mattresses. They are shaped like an hour glass and are connected with each other. This particular type of design can provide great support as long as the wires are heavy (gauge 12-13). Motion isolation can be an issue with this type of coil design.

Offset Coils are quite similar to Bonnell coils in design but with some changes. The changes made it possible for this design to contour to your body better and provide better motion isolation. This design is usually found in more expensive mattresses.

Continuous Coils can be very durable due to the nature of how it is designed. It consists of many coils that are made from one continuous steel wire. As a result, they can get support from adjacent coils to improve durability. This design can be very firm but the main issues are contouring and motion isolation.

Pocketed coils are the “high-end” in the coil design hierarchy. It is the most popular coil design today because of its superior performance. This design system consists of individual coils that are wrapped in fabric. They are joined together using fabric, glue or other materials. Since the coils are independent of each other, the results are better body contouring and motion isolation while still providing great support.

Coil Gauge and Coil Count

Coil gauge usually ranges from 12 to 18 and the lower the number, the thicker the wire. A thicker wire will result in a more supportive and firmer base. Coil count is the number of coils used in the support layer. The higher the coil count, the more expensive the mattress will be. The importance of the coil count is relative to the design and gauge of the wires used in the construction of the mattress. If the wires are heavy (12-13 gauge), a lower coil count is acceptable but if the wires are lighter, a higher coil count is required to be able to provide optimum support.

Additional Tips

The thickness of your mattress is purely dependent on your preference. A thinner mattress is usually more firm so keep that in mind. If you are, however, a fairly large person (more than 250lbs), a thicker mattress, 10″+, will be more suitable because it will provide ample support and comfort.

With regards to the foundation, you have the option of buying one or not. However, innerspring mattresses can perform better and last longer if it has a good foundation/box spring. The foundation/box spring can act as a “shock absorber” and as a result, the stress on the mattress is reduced. If you are going to buy one, it’s best to get the one that is recommended by the seller so as not to have problems with warranty.

Summary

Innerspring mattresses are still very popular to this day and one of the reasons is that they are very affordable. The prices are relatively low if you compare it to memory foam mattresses and latex mattresses with the same thickness. However, just because they are cheaper, that doesn’t mean that they are inferior. One thing that works in favor of innerspring mattresses is that there are many options to choose from regardless of how much your budget is. Hopefully, you found our innerspring mattress reviews to be helpful.
