Leesa Mattress Review

Leesa Mattress Review

The Leesa mattress is one of the more popular mattresses online and this is quite an achievement as the company is relatively young (they started in 2014). It is a unique mattress that should definitely be among your top choices.

The mattress is made entirely in the USA with premium materials and their “direct to consumer” approach allows them to offer a mattress of great quality for a very reasonable price.

  • Avena foam/Memory foam hybrid design
  • Great customer support

Cons

  • No firmness level options
  • Edge support is lacking

Mattress Build

The Leesa mattress is 10 inches thick and it has a 3 layer design. The topmost layer is a 2″ Cooling Avena foam, the middle layer is a 2″ Memory Foam and the base is a 6″ dense support foam. It is designed to provide bounciness, body contouring and pressure relief while maintaining a cool temperature as you sleep.

1. Polyester-lycra blend fabric 4 stripe cover
2. 2″ Avena Foam
3. 2″ Memory Foam
4. 6″ Dense Support Foam

The 2″ Avena foam is very similar to latex in terms of features. It is very durable, it provides bounce and pressure relief. The convoluted design allows for air flow, allowing you to sleep cooler.

The 2″ memory foam provides body contouring and additional pressure relief, allowing you to sleep more comfortably.

The 6″ dense support foam does a very good job of providing support to the sleeper.

Leesa mattress is made entirely in the USA and they only use CertiPUR-US certified foam.

Performance

  • Comfort and Support

The combination of Avena and memory foam is very impressive and it is very comfortable. You will still get the body contouring features of memory foam but at the same time, you won’t sink in too much and the mattress is bouncier due to the Avena foam, a latex alternative.

One issue that may arise is the lack of firmness level options. Some might find the mattress too soft or too firm. We actually feel that the mattress has a medium – medium firm comfort level.

As for support, it is very good when it comes to providing support as you sleep. The only problem is the lack of edge support. This may become a problem if there are two people sharing the mattress. Also, sitting on the edge is not recommended because you may slip.

  • Cooling

Increased temperature while sleeping is not a problem with the Leesa mattress. The Avena foam has a convoluted form and it is also breathable, allowing for air flow. Having it on top of the memory foam alleviates the temperature problem that is prevalent in other memory foam mattresses.

  • Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is very good in this mattress. The Avena foam behaves very much like latex so it can minimize motion transfer.

  • Off Gassing

Off gassing is somewhat of an issue. Some people report that the smell is strong while some say that the smell is very minimal. Since it is delivered vacuum sealed in a box, you should expect to have some initial odor but after some time, it will go away.

  • Edge Support

Edge support is not the best but it is also not the worst. This may be a problem for partners sharing the bed because the edges are not as supportive as the rest of the mattress. To alleviate this, you can get a bigger sized model. As for people that sleep alone, this will hardly be a problem. Sitting on the edges causes it to compress to around 2/3rds of the mattress height so take care in doing so, to prevent unwanted incidents.

Durability and Warranty

There really is no way to truly know how long the Leesa mattress will last because they only started in 2014, that’s just 2 years. However, going by the different testimonials from different sources, a lot of them have been sleeping on the mattress for over a year and it is still very comfortable and supportive. This is a very good sign. Also, we feel that the mattress is solidly built and will last a long time, provided that it is taken care of and used properly.

Of course, there are a few that were unlucky with their mattress but this is where the warranty comes in. They offer a 10 year non prorated warranty. They will either replace the mattress or repair it depending on the issue. For the complete warranty details, it is best to contact them directly.

Who is this Mattress For?

The Leesa mattress is great, however, it is not for everyone. If you are one of the following, then this mattress is recommended for you.

  • You are of average weight, 180lbs. and below. The mattress is 10 inches, if you are a big person, you might find the mattress not supportive enough.
  • You want a mattress that is around medium – medium firm in terms of comfort level. Since there are no options for different firmness levels, this mattress is not advisable for sleepers that prefer either a soft or very firm mattress.
  • You sleep on your back or on your stomach. Side sleepers can also get this mattress but there are some that find the mattress to be too firm. It performs best when used by back or stomach sleepers.
  • You want a memory foam mattress with its contouring features but you don’t want to sink too deep and you want some bounce.

If you are not one of these, you can check out our memory foam recommendations to see our list of the best memory foam mattresses.

Summary

The Leesa mattress is a very good mattress and we recommend it. It is a unique mattress that combines the bounciness that can only be found in latex mattresses with the body contouring features of memory foam. The Avena foam is a very good material and the way they used it on the overall design of the mattress serves a function. If you are on the market for a mid range memory foam mattress, the Leesa mattress should definitely be on your list.
